How to Save Money at the Supermarket: Tip #7

One of the best ways to save money at the supermarket is to be aware of marketing strategies used to encourage you to buy more and spend more. Every week for the next couple months, I’ll be posting a new tactic you should look out for the next time you’re at the grocery store.

Supermarket_Tip_7.jpgTip #7: Keep your eyes closed! Stores now have flat screen TVs and newspapers in the cafe seating area. This is a multi-purpose concept to get people used to staying longer in the store: the longer we stay the more we buy…and lets not forget that a rested shopper is a better shopper!

The topic of saving money at the grocery store is a definate hot one....i peronally know this from first hand experience..by working in a grocery department...

the one reason that markets change their aisles...is due to the fact that the regular customers know where everything is, and if something is moved around and relocated, it forces us as consumers to go on a scavanger hunt as you could put it, and find our regular items. In the process if finding our regular items, new and more expensive items will be placed in the aisles, where they used to be, forcing you to look at the new items and bamb...you have your impulse buying...sneaky eh?

I started a project last month, where i would have a list of items that i normally purchase, the size, the price ect...
I have noticed, quite considerably..the sizes are shrinking, and the prices are staying the same...so beware of this..it is up to us as consumers to know our products....

here are a couple of brands that are shrinking...

Folgers coffe
Dreyers ice cream
Frito lay potato chips

These are just a few of the items...

Thank you for listening to my sound off...=-)

One of the best decisions I made to save money was to start grocery delivery through Stop & Shop's Pea Pod program. (I am in New England, so I'm not sure what is available elsewhere.) You can sort by price per unit, and the site has a tab of all the sale items. They also send e-mail updates with new specials. Delivery is $7.00, but I end up saving about $25.00 on a $150 order because of all of the specials and sale items I would normally not have the pacients to find if I were physically in the store. The only down fall is, if you have a coupon, you have to input all the numbers, instead of simply being able to scan the barcode at check out. You can keep a running list going on the website and go back to it everyday until it is complete. Delivery is always available the following day and if you choose a late delivery time, you can save an additnal $1.00.
