New Product Reviews

With over 40,000 products in the average supermarket, people don't have time (or the money) to test every product on the shelves – so we do it for you!

Each week we will post the latest reviews and I hope you will log in to see what’s hot…and what’s not!

Each product is judged and taste-tested based on the following seven criteria:

1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food

2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?

3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?

4. (15 points) Ingredients: What's in it, how natural is it?

5. (10 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions?*

6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description?

7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as reseal ability, added freshness, better storage, etc?

*Products that do not require any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score.

Wolfgang Puck Organic Creamy Tomato Soup

np_120707_creamy-tomato.jpgThis new soup comes from celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck's line of products. We love the fact that it's made with all natural and organic ingredients. And although this soup has a nice flavor (although more on the cream side than tomato), it still has too much sodium and sugar. If you compare this soup to that of other similar organic creamy tomato soups, you'll find that there are some brands out there with half the sodium. Nielsen data from the 52 weeks ending November 3, 2007; soups have only increased in dollar sales by 1.8% whereas last year that increase was 6.1%. That's a big difference and could be attributed to more educated consumers looking for healthier, lower sodium soups.

Garden Harvest Toasted Chips Banana –

np_120707_gardenharvest.jpgThis is a surprisingly great new product! It's wonderful to see that the first ingredient is bananas, which also adds to the strong banana flavor. We love the fact that they didn't use high fructose corn syrup, which is often found in chips like this. And guess what? There's half a serving of fruit in a 1oz. serving (6 chips)! Pitfalls: 22g of carbohydrates, and why do they choose to use artificial coloring? Make it all natural, and we're looking at a great-tasting snack food that's good for our bodies as well!

Zevia Natural Orange

np_120707_zevia.jpgMany consumers who choose to cut out sugar from their diets also find themselves unable to enjoy the flavor of most diet sodas because of the highly artificial taste from the sweeteners used. This product is an excellent alternative. Data from The Nielsen Company proves that consumers aren't drinking soft drinks like they used to, with declines of dollar sales by 2.4% in the last year. Although diet soft drinks show minimal growth (0.9%), that's a big difference from last year when sales grew by 7.1%. As consumers shift more toward natural ingredients in the foods they buy, Zevia has a great opportunity to attract soda drinkers to their non-artificial tasting soft drinks, sweetened naturally with Stevia.

Harry & David Moose Munch Snack Mix Way Better Cheddar

np_120707_moosemunch.jpgThis company is more well-known for their fruit and their classic gift baskets which leaves the question, "Why not fruit snacks?" Moose Munch snack mixes were created ten years ago, but now the company has added this new flavor. Although the flavor combinations are not bad, we were disappointed to find that the pretzels don’t have a crisp texture. We also found that there's just too much sodium and fat! For a product that carries such a steep gourmet price, we just didn't find that this one delivers.
