Chocolate is always high on everyone’s list! 80% of adults choose to give out chocolate candy and 68% of kids say they prefer anything made with chocolate. TrickorTreatKids2.jpgAnd remember…once your kids have their Halloween bounty help them to enjoy their candy in moderation by portioning it into small festive orange cellophane bags they can enjoy over the next few weeks- if stored in an airtight container and kept in a cool place candies can last three to six months. It’s a good opportunity to talk with your kids about the importance of nutrition and balancing holiday fun with healthy activities and sports.

THE IMPORTANT STUFF and words of caution:

  1. Inspect all the treats you bring home before they are eaten.

  2. Discard any treats in loose, open wrappers.

  3. Read those labels and try to make substitutions so the allergy suffering kids don’t feel deprived...adults too!

Be sure the little ones are supervised especially crossing the street and going to homes of people you do not know and protect them in dark alleys or streets that are not well lighted.

If you run out of candy, do not, and I repeat do not steal your kids candy to pass out to trick-or-treaters, and if you *absolutely* must then allow them to get 10 of their favorites out first or have them be the ones to pass it out! (I still have a memory of bawling my eyes out when I was 7, even though my parents have forgotten the incident! I also always ask my nieces and nephews if I want a piece rather than just taking it when they aren't looking)

The best treat for kids:

Chem-lites. Kids love them and they can help the kids be spotted at night. Their are a lot of web sites that sell chem-lite bracletts, necklaces, and wands.

Hey it beats candy and looks cool too.

note: Half the web sites listed here only sell to business. Cool ideas but almost impossible to buy from.

Next time list some web sites normal moms and dads can use.

I always bake cookies and brownies for the children that come to the door. I know I would never let my child eat anything that is from some stranger. But i put labels on them. They have my name, adress, and phone number. I do get compliments but I understand if they still throw it out.

My parents give out sample sizes of stuff like lotion and soap from nice hotels. They keep a basket of candy and one of soaps, and let the kids pick. It's amazing how many of the little girls want a nice smelling soap or lotion instead of chocolate. Probably makes their parents happy too.

The little fruit treats that are individualy packaged are great, and a lot of kid perfer them to chocolate. Many kids now don't even like chocolate and sometimes it is refreshing for them not to always get the chocolate.
