New Product Reviews

With over 40,000 products in the average supermarket, people don't have time (or the money) to test every product on the shelves – so we do it for you!

Each week we will post the latest reviews and I hope you will log in to see what’s hot…and what’s not!

Each product is judged and taste-tested based on the following seven criteria:

1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food

2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?

3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?

4. (15 points) Ingredients: What's in it, how natural is it?

5. (10 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions?*

6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description?

7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as reseal ability, added freshness, better storage, etc?

*Products that do not require any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score.

Theo Chocolate 3400 Phinney Bread & Chocolate Dark Chocolate

TasteValueHealthIngredientsPrepAppearancePackagingTotal
28161114 N/A4487

np_082907_theo.jpgChocolate lovers will go for this one! This Seattle based chocolatier makes their products from organic, Fair Trade certified™ cocoa beans from Panama, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. The dark chocolate has a minimum 65% cacao content. This particular bar combines dark chocolate with French bread crumbs giving it a salty, buttery taste with a crunch. It's heavenly! The little 2-oz bar costs $3.25, but for quality, gourmet chocolate, we think it's pretty fair. Nib Brittle and Coffee are also available in the 3400 Phinney dark chocolate line.

Pacific Natural Foods Organic Light Sodium Creamy Butternut Squash Soup

TasteValueHealthIngredientsPrepAppearancePackagingTotal
26171214 94486

np_082907_soup.jpg

One of the problems with soups you find in the supermarket is the high levels of sodium. For example, a cup of tomato soup can contain around 740 mg of sodium, and that's too much. These soup, made from all natural and organic ingredients, is significantly lower containing only 280 mg of sodium per one cup serving. Available in a 32-ounce, shelf-stable, aseptic package, this creamy soup tastes great without all the sodium. In the past three years, sales of soups have been slowly recovering with a reported 3.6% increase in dollar sales in the 52 weeks ending 8/11/07 according to data from The Nielsen Company. Perhaps it's healthier offerings from products like this one bringing shoppers back to the soup aisle. Retails for $2.49-$2.99/32-fl oz.

np_082907_sushiwrap.jpgAlthough sushi is more popular than ever, it's usually something people enjoy at a restaurant and can be a little intimidating to make at home. But this company has come up with a product that makes at-home sushi-making not only easy and fun, but also a healthy meal or snack. The package includes sushi wraps, sprouted brown rice bowl (get your whole grains here!), and soy sauce. Annie's sushi wraps are all natural and don't contain MSG. They won't be quite as tasty as your favorite sushi restaurant, but depending on what you fill them with, you'll be patting yourself on the back that you made sushi! Also available in Sticky White Rice variety. Retails for $3.89/7.0-oz box.

Navitas Naturals Trail Power 3 Berry-Cacao Nibs-Cashews

TasteValueHealthIngredientsPrepAppearancePackagingTotal
21141012 n/a3373

np_082907_navitas.jpgThis is not your average trail mix, that's for sure! A mix of organic goji berries, organic mulberries, wild Incan golden berries, organic cacao nibs, and raw cashews are what makes this product an antioxidant-rich snack. Another bonus is that trail mixes can often times be loaded with sugar, whereas no sugar has been added to this product. The problem with this trail mix is that although the ingredients may pack antioxidants, the taste is awfully bitter. And here's something else we noticed. In a one-ounce bag, which is a very small amount, easily consumed in one sitting for a snack even by light eaters, there are four servings. At 110 calories per serving, that means 440 calories for the whole bag ... a little too much maybe for a snack.
