New Product Reviews

With over 40,000 products in the average supermarket, people don't have time (or the money) to test every product on the shelves – so we do it for you!

Each Wednesday we will post the latest reviews and I hope you will log in to see what’s hot…and what’s not!

Each product is judged and taste-tested based on the following seven criteria:

1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food

2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?

3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?

4. (15 points) Ingredients: What's in it, how natural is it?

5. (10 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions?*

6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description?

7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as reseal ability, added freshness, better storage, etc?

*Products that do not require any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score.

Ming Tsai Blue Ginger Thai Lime Rice Multigrain Corn Chips

TasteValueHealthIngredientsPrepAppearancePackagingTotal
28181212N/A*4488

np_061307_mingtsai.JPGCreated by Emmy Award winning chef television host, Ming Tsai, these chips are a great discovery! If you like the Thai flavors, these multigrain chips have that tangy, lime flavor that will make your taste buds dance! They are great by themselves or with a salsa like mango-pineapple. One bag (50 g) is 200 calories, but if you compare that to most potato chips or tortilla chips, that's considerably lower. These chips appeal to the growing palates of Americans who seem to be more inclined than ever to buy exotic flavors. Retails for $0.99/1.75-oz bag.

Kraft Bistro Deluxe Sundried Tomato Parmesan Penne Pasta with Sundried Tomatoes & Basil in a Cheese

TasteValueHealthIngredientsPrepAppearancePackagingTotal
2617111184481

np_061307_kraftbistro.JPGThis new product from Kraft is for mac and cheese lovers who want to take it a step further. Easy to prepare, just boil pasta, add sundried tomatoes and cheese, and voila! The parmesan cheese sauce is quite heavy, so those who like to go lighter on the cheese can just leave out half of the cheese sauce for a lower calorie/fat version. We do wish they'd give us a little more of those sundried tomatoes … that's the best part! This product is not for those watching their sodium intake (870 mg/per serving). Retails for $2.89/10-oz package.

Sara Lee Soft & Smooth made with Whole Grain White Bread

TasteValueHealthIngredientsPrepAppearancePackagingTotal
2512108N/A*4473

np_061307_saralee.JPGWhite bread didn't use to be as good for us as whole wheat breads, although some, especially kids, just love the taste of white bread more. The benefit of Sara Lee's new whole grain white bread is the soft, sweet taste of white with 25% more whole grains. But the problem is that Sara Lee is still using high fructose corn syrup in their bread. And, it's on the higher side of calories and fat (150 calories/2 slices, 2g fat/2 slices). Just because it's got 25% more whole grains doesn't make up for the artificial ingredients still in there. Retails for $1.99/20-oz loaf.

Corner Bistro Flatbread Pizzas

np_061307_stouffers.JPGHere is what Ruth C. of Elkins, West Virginia, had to say about this product. "For those who don't like a standard pizza or enjoy unusual combinations, these little pizzas are a nice change. They are flavorful, with either chicken, shrimp, or southwestern flavors, and a crunchy crust. We like them for a snack, so one does serve two people, unless you are really hungry." Retails for $3.99/9.25-oz.

OOOH - I'll definitely be looking for Ming Tsai at my Target soon!

And thanks for pointing out the high fructose corn syrup in the sara lee - we do try to go with whole grains, and in a quick grocery run, I might not have seen that!

I am really surprised at the high marks on the taste section. There are many food that are healthy and tasty.

I bought RingO's Chicken Rings for my son. To my suprise I liked them very much. I was very happy to see they only have 3 grams of fat per serving.

Here's a tip to make the Kraft Bistro Deluxe a lot tastier:

Make the dish, and at the very end, mix in a COMPLETELY drained 10oz can of Rotel Original Dried Tomatoes & Green Chilies. YUMMY!

Note: This also works really well on the original Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.
